So, you’re dreaming of getting into IIT? That’s amazing!
But yes — when you first look at the JEE Advanced syllabus, it can feel like you’re standing in front of a huge mountain.
Don’t worry. Every mountain can be climbed — if you know the way.
This guide is your map to help you climb step by step.
Let’s break everything down, in a simple and easy-to-understand way, subject by subject.
What is JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is one of the toughest entrance exams in India, but also the most rewarding, because it gives you the chance to study in an IIT.
It is conducted by one of the IITs (this year, by the 7 Zonal Coordinating IITs) under the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
Subjects in JEE Advanced:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
It follows mostly the topics from Class 11 and 12, but the questions are much deeper, and test your understanding, logic, and problem-solving, not just memory.
Subject-Wise Syllabus Breakdown
Let’s look at each subject one by one.
Physics
Physics is where concepts and calculations meet. Some chapters are tough, but once you understand them, they become fun.
🔧 General Physics
- Units & Measurements
- Errors in experiments
- Simple experiments like:
- Finding gravity using a pendulum
- Finding focal length of a lens
Mechanics (Very Important)
- Motion in a straight line or circle
- Newton’s laws
- Work, energy, and power
- Rotational motion
- Gravitation
- Fluids
Tip: Mechanics is the base of Physics. Learn it well.
Thermal Physics
- Heat and temperature
- Laws of thermodynamics
- Kinetic theory of gases
- Heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)
Electricity & Magnetism
- Electrostatics (charges, Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law)
- Current electricity (Ohm’s law, circuits)
- Magnetism (bar magnets, magnetic field)
- Electromagnetic induction
- Alternating current (AC)
Optics
- Ray optics (mirrors, lenses, reflection, refraction)
- Wave optics (interference, diffraction, Huygens principle)
Modern Physics
- Photoelectric effect
- Atomic models
- Nuclear physics
- Radioactivity
Chemistry
Chemistry has three parts — Physical, Organic, and Inorganic.
Physical Chemistry (Concept + Calculation)
- Atomic Structure
- Chemical Bonding
- Thermodynamics (Heat, energy, laws)
- Equilibrium (Acids, bases, salts, pH, buffers)
- Electrochemistry
- Chemical Kinetics (reaction speed, Arrhenius equation)
Organic Chemistry (Reactions + Reasoning)
- Basics: IUPAC names, types of isomerism
- Reaction types: Substitution, addition, elimination
- Functional groups:
- Alcohols
- Aldehydes & Ketones
- Carboxylic acids
- Amines
- Hydrocarbons: Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, benzene
Tip: Practice reactions daily to remember mechanisms.

Inorganic Chemistry (Facts + Concepts)
- Periodic Table: Trends in size, energy, etc.
- Coordination Compounds: Naming, bonding, isomerism
- Extraction of Metals: General processes
- Qualitative Analysis: How to identify cations and anions
Tip: This part requires regular revision.
Mathematics
Math is all about practice. The more you solve, the better you get.
Algebra
- Complex numbers
- Quadratic equations
- Sequences & Series
- Permutations & Combinations
- Binomial theorem
- Matrices & Determinants
Calculus (Most Important for JEE)
Differential Calculus
- Limits & Continuity
- Derivatives
- Tangents and Normals
- Maxima and Minima
Integral Calculus
- Indefinite and Definite Integration
- Area under curves
- Differential equations
Coordinate Geometry
- Straight lines
- Circles
- Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola
- 3D Geometry (Lines and Planes in 3D)
Trigonometry
- Trigonometric formulas
- Identities and equations
- Properties of triangles
Vectors
- Dot product, cross product
- Scalar triple product
Tip: Don’t just read — solve problems daily.
Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) — For Architecture Students
If you want to become an architect (join B.Arch in IIT), you must give AAT after JEE Advanced.
AAT includes:
- Freehand Drawing
- Geometry and Shapes
- 3D Vision and Imagination
- Colour sense and design
- Famous buildings and architects
How to Use This Syllabus
Here’s how you can prepare smartly:
Make a Master List
- Print or save this syllabus.
- Tick chapters after finishing them.
Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses
- Give more time to weak topics.
- But don’t skip any chapter.
Start With NCERT
- NCERT is your best friend.
- Understand concepts here first.
- Then move to advanced books (like HC Verma, OP Tandon, etc.)
Practice Like It’s Exam Day
- Solve previous year papers
- Give mock tests regularly
Final Words – You CAN Do It!
Yes, JEE Advanced is hard.
But it’s not impossible.
If you are regular, focused, and don’t give up, you can succeed — even if you’re from a small village or a government school.
Start small.
Study daily.
Focus on understanding, not just memorizing.
