The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has made a significant change in how it admits students to its BTech programme in Mathematics and Computing. Starting with the 2026–27 academic year, admissions will be processed through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) using candidates’ JEE Advanced scores, replacing the earlier direct admission system.
What’s New in the Admission Process?
Previously, IISc conducted its own selection procedure for BTech aspirants based solely on JEE Advanced results, which required candidates to complete formalities in person. From 2026 onwards, the institute will participate in the centralized JoSAA counselling system, enabling students to apply and secure seats online just like for other premier engineering institutes such as IITs and NITs.
This change is expected to simplify admissions and offer a more unified, transparent process for applicants. through JoSAA, students can list IISc among their preferred institutes and get seat allotment based on their JEE Advanced rank and choices filled during counselling.
About the BTech Programme at IISc
IISc’s BTech degree focuses on Mathematics and Computing, blending rigorous theory with problem-solving skills relevant to research and technology. The four-year programme covers advanced topics in mathematics, computing and associated sciences, with opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary study.
Who Can Apply? Eligibility Highlights
To take part in the seat allocation process for IISc’s BTech programme, candidates must:
- Appear in JEE Advanced 2026 and obtain a valid rank.
- Follow the JoSAA counselling schedule, which is expected to begin in early June 2026.
In past years, JEE Advanced was conducted by IIT Roorkee, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 held on the same day, usually in mid-May. A large number of candidates — over 2.5 lakh qualifiers last year — take part in JEE Advanced every year, competing for top engineering seats including at IISc.
How JoSAA Counselling Works
JoSAA is the central authority that manages online seat allotment for engineering and technical programmes across India. Candidates who qualify JEE Advanced can register on the JoSAA portal, submit choices of institutions and courses, and participate in multiple rounds of seat allocation based on ranks and preferences.
Joining IISc in the JoSAA process is expected to make admissions more accessible and predictable for students, without the need for separate institutional procedures.
Why This Change Matters
By integrating with JoSAA, IISc aligns itself with national counselling practices used by the country’s leading technical schools. This shift brings greater convenience for students preparing for JEE Advanced, as they can now include IISc in the same application and counselling workflow used for other top engineering institutes.
